Schumann
Märchenbilder (Fairy Tale Pictures), Op. 113
I. Nicht schnell
II. Lebhaft
III. Rasch
IV. Langsam, mit melancholischem Ausdruck

Lyda Chen, viola
Martha Argerich, piano
Lugano 2010

Here, the very formidable mother-daughter duo of Argerich and Chen perform Schumann’s substantial contribution to viola literature. The movements are loosely based on scenes from various German fairy tales—including those of Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, and Sleeping Beauty—though Schumann recorded the specific references only tangentially in his journals.
