Santa takes a much-deserved respite at Panama City Beach. State Library and Archives of Florida, 1956.
Stravinsky at the piano.
Johnny Cash, by the illustrious American music photographer David Gahr.
For years now, on my desk has reposed a beautifully executed black-and-white photo of me as a gangly, bespectacled, dress casual twelve-year-old posing on the front steps of an Upper West Side brownstone. I was in New York to study for the summer, and the picture was snapped by none other than Mr. Gahr, an old friend of my relatives. At that time I had no idea whatsoever that he was internationally celebrated for his photos of Miles Davis, Count Basie, Bob Dylan, Son House, Patti Smith, and the like…I just remember that it was hot enough to cook an egg on the pavement that afternoon, and that he was a really nice fellow.
