Edgar Degas - Dancers in the Rehearsal Room with a Double Bass [ca. 1883]

A Piedmontese artist, M. Langlois, who played in Paris about fifteen years ago, produced very peculiar high tones of incredible power on the double-bass (with the bow) by pinching the highest string between the thumb and forefinger of the left hand, thus moving almost to the bridge. If there were need to render in the orchestra the violent outcry of a female voice, no other instrument could produce it better than the double-basses treated in this fashion, I doubt whether our artists are familiar with M. Langlois’ method; but they could easily learn it within a short time.

Berlioz Orchestration (Translation, with additions by Strauss)

Does anyone know what this effect is called, or what it sounds like? I’ve never come across it before :S
